Shionoya Sayaka (塩ノ谷 早耶香), currently known by the stage name sayan, is a Japanese singer signed to the record label MIGAKU Entertainment.

Early Life[]

Shionoya Sayaka was born on March 12, 1994 in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan.[1]

Shionoya started training jazz dance when she was in kindergarten, which made her want to become a musician. "I have never been good at getting attention or expressing my emotions in words, but I felt that I could express them in dance and that it was fun to have someone look at me and recognize me. I thought, 'If I combine dance with singing, I can expand my range of expression, and I can convey my feelings that are difficult to convey in words through the filter of singing,' when I was in high school."[2]

However, her grandparents as well as her teacher in high school opposed her goal to become a singer, which frustrated her. As a result, she decided to participate in a big scale audition by herself to be accepted.[2]

In 2011, Shionoya became one of the finalists in the vocal category of the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 3 ~For Girls~ out of about 30,000 people but was not selected as a winner. After that, she started attending EXPG Fukuoka.[2] She later revealed that making it to the final round of auditions made her dream seem more realistic in some ways, and that as she went through the lessons, she became more and more determined to compete as a solo singer.[2]

Career[]

2012[]

While training at EXPG, she found an audition flyer for King Records since there were flyers for various auditions on the EXPG campus.[2] Ultimately, she participated in the KING RECORDS Presents Dream Vocal Audition, an audition held by King Records and Kodansha, and was chosen as one of the 15 finalists out of about 10,000 entries. On May 26, she won the "Dream Vocalist Loved by ViVi" award, one of the three grand prizes, at the final screening of the audition held at Akasaka BLITZ, and her debut was confirmed.[3][2][4]

After winning the Grand Prix, she had the support of her family and moved to Tokyo by herself.[2]

On January 23, Shionoya made her major debut with the single "Dear Heaven".

After her debut, started a project called Uta Shugyo (うた修行) in which she travelled throughout Japan singing in all 47 prefectures of the country in order to improve her skills as a singer and her ability to convey her emotions and thoughts to others through song.[5]
