History[]
2008-2010: Pre-debut and indie debut[]
Happiness first appeared during EXILE's 2008 dome tour EXILE PERFECT LIVE 2008 as backup dancers and later appeared in EXILE's music videos, at the time being a five-member unit consisting of EXPG students MIYUU, MIMU, KAREN, SAYAKA, and KAEDE.[2] It was later revealed that the group had been officially formed on October 26, 2008.[3]
In 2009, LDH revealed that it had been decided to debut three girl groups in the same year, with them being named after the three words "Love", "Dream", and "Happiness" (LDH's acronym), which are the company's core themes.[4][5] This endeavour was titled the "Love, Dream, Happiness" project.[6]
On April 10, 2009, a Happiness Vocal Audition was announced in order to find vocalists from the general public for the group, with applications being accepted from the same day. The audition was open for girls from the 4th grade of elementary school to the 3rd grade of junior high school nationwide. Additionally, current ability of the applicants was not a focus for this recruitment, and dance experience was not particularly required. The main goal was to choose someone who would be well-balanced when joining the five members of Happiness.[7]
On June 27, 2009, a second Happiness Vocal Audition was announced by UNIVERAL MUSIC to find vocalists from the general public for the group, with the deadline for applications being June 30. The requirements for the participants and focus were the same as for the first audition.[4]
On July 24, 2009, new member YURINO was added to the group after she had won the semi-Grand Prix at the LDH DREAM GIRLS AUDITION 2008.[3][8]
In the summer of 2009, the three groups of the "Love, Dream, Happiness" project went on a nationwide free live show tour to introduce them to the public and promote their upcoming debut, with the final show taking place on August 3.[5][4] All groups were scheduled to debut afterwards under different record labels: Love would debut under Sony Music Associated Records, Happiness under UNIVERSAL SIGMA, and Dream under Avex.[5]
On October 21, 2009, Happiness released their indie debut DVD single "Happy Talk", with member KAREN taking on the role of the sole vocalist. The title track was also used as a commercial song for brand Mister Donut, for which the members had been selected as image characters.[2][9]
On December 25, 2009, new member MAYU, a vocalist who had passed the Happiness Vocal Audition, was added to the group.[10][11]
On June 9, 2010, Happiness was planned to make their major debut under UNIVERSAL MUSIC with the release of the single "Perfect Smile".[12] However, the release was cancelled and their debut was postponed.
In December 2010, the group started a pre-debut event tour including six shows in the Kanto region and surrounding areas. The tour ended on February 5, 2011.[13]
2011: Major debut[]
On January 1, it was announced that LDH would hold the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 3 ~For Girls~, with one of its objectives being to recruit new members for Happiness.[14]
On February 9, the group made their major debut with the release of their first major label single "Kiss Me".[15][16][17][18]

On May 16, the group released their fourth single "We Can Fly".
On June 20, Happiness released their first studio album Happy Time.[26]
On August 10, it was announced that member MAYU had been being diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis, and the first three concerts of the group's first live tour Happiness LIVE TOUR 2012 "Happy Time" (on August 12, August 17 and August 18) had been re-scheduled to October. Starting with the concert in Osaka on August 26, all concerts onwards would be held as scheduled.[27] Shortly after, on August 23, it was announced that it would still take some time before MAYU were able to perform satisfactorily as a member of Happiness, and it was determined that it would be difficult to find suitable replacement dates for the concerts that take into account the large number of customers and fans who would be attending. Therefore, it had been decided to cancel all concerts of the group's first live tour Happiness LIVE TOUR 2012 "Happy Time".[28] Subsequently, MAYU went on a hiatus and halted all activities to receive treatment and recover.
On October 25, it was announced that MIMU, who had been on hiatus from her activities, had now officially left the group (and E-girls) to focus on her studies after discussions between MIMU herself, the Happiness members, and the staff.[29][30]

On May 27, E-girls members Suda Anna and Kawamoto Ruri joined the group as a performer and vocalist respectively.[31]
On June 3, LDH announced a competition between Happiness and their sister group Flower, with both groups releasing a single on August 7. Additionally, the two groups would go on a Happiness VS Flower Musha Shugyo and each hold free events in various locations, starting on July 2.[32][33] This battle would be based on things like ringtone rankings, the number of supportive comments on their special website, YouTube views, the number of attendees at the free events of their Musha Shugyo and the sales of their new singles.[32][34]
On August 7, Happiness released their fifth single "Sunshine Dream ~Ichido Kiri no Natsu~", which competed against Flower's single "Taiyou to Himawari".[34] Member MAYU had returned to activities in May 2013[35] and was supposed to participate in this single, but on June 25, she announced that she had decided to withdraw from participating in the Musha Shugyo performances as well as the release of the single considering her current physical condition and that she was not fully recovered yet, therefore being absent.[33]
Two weeks after the release, it was revealed via EXILE's TV show Shuukan EXILE that Flower won the battle by 3 points against 2 of Happiness.

2023: Disbandment[]
On June 5, it was announced that the group will be disbanding on September 26. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic overlapping with their future plans of global expansion (that were announced before E-girls disbanded), the group was unable to perform as they had hoped, and the members went through repeated discussions regarding their future activities and about their own lives. In the shared feeling of "I love Happiness and want to cherish the fans who support us", there were occasional disagreements but in the end the members came to the conclusion that the disbandment would be the best. Before the disbandment, the group will be holding the fanmeeting Happiness Fan Meeting 2023 "Happiness" in four different cities from July 23 to August 6,[51] and then hold their last concert titled Happiness LAST LIVE 2023 "Happiness" on September 26 in KT Zepp Yokohama. After the disbandment, SAYAKA, Kaede, MIYUU and Kawamoto Ruri will focus on their activities as members of SG5, while Fujii Karen will focus on her activities individually.[52][53][54][55][56]
Notice regarding LDH JAPAN artist "Happiness"
We regret to announce that Happiness will be disbanding on September 26, 2023. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic and other factors, the group has not been able to perform as they had hoped, and each member has been thinking deeply about their future activities and their own lives. They had many discussions with each other, and sometimes with the staff members, and they have come to a decision to dissolve the group. They all shared a strong desire to cherish the fans who love and support Happiness, and although their opinions sometimes clashed, they finally came to the conclusion that the group should "disband". We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all those who have supported Happiness, and to all those who have warmly watched over them and cheered them on for the past 12 and a half years since their debut. As for their future activities, the group is planning to hold fan meetings in four cities from late July to early August, and their last live concert on September 26. We will do our best to support the Happiness members so that they can continue their activities in their own way until their last day. After September 26, Kaede, SAYAKA, MIYUU, and Kawamoto Ruri will focus on their activities as SG5 members based overseas, while Fujii Karen will continue her activities as an individual. They will continue to deliver entertainment that will please everyone through the respective activities of each of them in the future. Please continue to give them warm support.
