Ishii Anna

Ishii Anna (石井杏奈) is a Japanese actress and former performer. She is a former member of the girl group E-girls.

Early Life[]

Ishii Anna was born on July 11, 1998 in Tokyo Prefecture, Japan. She has three siblings: an older brother, a younger sister and a younger brother.[1][2][3]

Ishii began practicing dancing in the second grande of elementary school at the recommendation of her mother.[4][5][6] "When my mother had a baby girl, she wanted me to learn ballet and abacus, but there were no ballet classes nearby, so I started attending a Hip-Hop dance school that happened to be nearby." However, Ishii did not enjoy dancing: "I think my mother probably wanted to improve my posture and sense of rhythm, but I wasn't into it at all, and every Friday when we had lessons was depressing, and I was thinking, 'If I get through this Friday, I'm off!'."[5]

In 5th grade of elementary school, she was scouted by EXPG during a dance competition.[7][5] She initially had no interest in the entertainment industry at all, but her mother suggested that she should just listen to what they had to say, so she went to listen to them "with a light heart". That's when she learned about the world of show business, and as she loved watching dramas, she also became interested in becoming an actress.[5]

Career[]

2010[]

In 2010, she debuted as a model in the U-15 fashion magazine nico☆puchi.

In the same year (when she was in 6th grade), she was a back dancer for EXILE during their EXILE LIVE TOUR 2010 FANTASY. For the performance of the song "Tenohira no Suna", she was paired with Kobayashi Naoki.[8]

2011[]

In 2011, she participated in the dance performance division of the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 3 ~For Girls~ and successfully passed the audition. As a result, she was chosen to become a member of bunny, a non-debuted dance and vocal girl group.[9]

2012[]

In April, Ishii made acting debut in the TV drama Shiritsu Bakareya Koukou.

In August 2012, she was added to E-girls for the single "Follow Me" as part of bunny.

2014[]

On June 30, it was announced that Ishii would not participate in E-girls' first tour E-girls LIVE TOUR 2014 "COLORFUL LAND" due to conflicting schedules.[10] She later revealed that she decided by herself to concentrate on her work as an actress and the filming of the movie Solomon's Perjury (released in 2015) instead of going on her first tour. This decision became a turning point for her, as she received an award and much recognition by the people around her for her role in the movie.[5] Nevertheless, the decision had been a difficult one for her to make: "I was still a student at the time, so I didn't know which choice was the right one for me, and I was crying every day after consulting with people around me (laughs). I wanted an adult to decide for me, but thankfully I was given a choice, so I had to make a proper decision on my own." At that time, she also talked with EXILE HIRO about the situation and her worries, and he encouraged her by saying "It is better to have setbacks. So don't be in a hurry.", which motivated her to take a step forward. Looking back, she later considered the choice she made as the right one.[5]

2019[]

On December 22, with the announcement of E-girls' disbandment set for around the end of 2020, it was revealed that Ishii would focus on acting and modeling activities.[11]

2020[]

On December 31, E-girls disbanded. She later revealed that she was a little "shaken" for about a year after E-girls announced its breakup (in 2019), and afraid of what she was going to do. For this reason, she discussed with her manager and decided to do solo work thoughout the group's last year (2020) and appear in as many TV dramas and movies as possible for the year 2021.[12]

2021[]

On December 29, she held her first solo fan meeting event titled Xmas & 2021 Arigatou Event at LDH Kitchen The Tokyo Haneda.

2022[]

On November 5, she started her own radio program "mizuiro ind LIGHT BLUE CAFÉ" on FM Osaka and TOKYO FM, for which she would serve as the DJ and deliver comforting music and interesting information on a single theme, such as fashion, gourmet food, and solo travel.[13]

2023[]

On July 24, Ishii will hold her second solo fan meeting event titled Ishii Anna Birthday Event ~2023~.[14]

Personal Life[]

Family

Ishii has a strong admiration for her mother, Kimie,[15] and describes her "very energetic",[3] "like a person who is out of reach", as "the highest level of her admiration" and " the person closest to her". "She treats me like a friend, but she is also a parent. She is fair and affectionate with all of my siblings, but not too intrusive. She always says, "My children come first", but she also enjoys her work and hobbies. I admire the way she enjoys her life as a mother but also as a woman. I hope to become a mother like her someday." Ishii also values her mother's feedback to her work and advice for her life.[16][2] Overall, she describes her family as very close.[3]

When asked if she wanted to be a mother like her own mother in 2023, she answered in the affirmative and revealed that she would like to be married by the time she is 30. "When I was in junior high and high school, I always wanted to get married. I thought it would be nice to have a family."[3]

Her younger sisters, Ishii Chino, was a student at EXPG too, and part of the trainee groups Bunnies and KIZZY.

She has relatives who live in Kyushu.[15]

Trivia[]

  • Hobbies: Dramas, Movie appreciation
  • Specialty: Using the abacus
  • Shares same first name as fellow E-girls member Suda Anna.
  • According to herself, she is the type of person who wants to see others happy rather than herself, and the type who can rely on others only when her friends call her out when she is holding back and keeping things inside, rather than asking them to listen to her when something is wrong.[72]
    • Has the desire to always make other people feel comfortable and wants to act in a way that is not selfish, but with other people in mind.[16]
    • Prioritizes others over herself and doesn't want to "bother" anybody. "When I am alone, I am the type that takes action immediately, but when I am with my friends, I prioritize what they want to do over what I want to do. I do so because it is more fun that way, but in terms of interpersonal relationships, I may have a strong sense of "not bothering others", or something like that."[73]
    • Tries not to make the people around her wait. "I think it's good to take your time to improve the work, like when you have a session with the director about a play, but I don't want to create a situation where the set is being pushed back because of me. When I was a member of E-girls, we often did activities in large groups, so I have a habit of focusing on efficiency." However, she also attributes this mindset to her impatient personality. "[...] I am often told that I am the fastest person on each job site when it comes to getting dressed."[74]
  • Describes herself as "shy" and "passive".[12][2]
    • According to herself, she is not a good talker and can't talk by herself all the time.[12]
    • For this reason, she started her own radio show in 2022 out of curiosity and a sense of challenge.[12]
  • According to herself, she not very good at comedy.[16]
  • When she feels depressed or like she is going around in circles, the first thing that comes to her mind is that "time will solve the problem". Until then, she is encouraged by the words of her fans, writes about her thoughts on her blog, gets a lot of sleep, watches fun variety shows, and puts in some entertainment to take her mind off things.[16]
    • According to herself, she gets depressed quite a bit when she can't express herself the way she wants to or when she can't respond well to another actor's performance, but has gotten better at handling it. "There are times when I cry at home out of frustration, but I am now able to look toward the future and say, "This is my current ability, so I have to do my best", which is a big change." She developed this optimistic mindset when she was 20 years old, at a time when she was very busy juggling live performances and dramas, and had little time to sleep.[1]
  • Looking back at her childhood, she later revealed that she was probably a loner type as a student, and that her best subject was Japanese and her weakest one was science. "At school, I didn't belong to a group and would talk to people when they talked to me. [...]. Basically, I don't mind working alone. I went to and from school with the same children all the time. [...]. At the time, I was attending school while also doing entertainment activities, so I was lagging behind the other students, so I would do experiments for science assignments by myself after school (laughs)."[75]
  • Working on the movie Solomon's Perjury made her fall in love with acting.[73]
    • Received the role after a six-month audition, followed by a one-month workshop.[1]
    • Considered it as a chance for her to fundamentally change her approach to acting.[1]
    • On the set, she felt that she was "recognised" and when she was acting, she felt for the first time the "adrenaline rush" that she only knew from performing as a member of E-girls.[73]
    • Learned that having her work appreciated also leads to her own sense of fulfillment.[73]
    • According to herself, she hated her voice and face before this experience.[73]
  • Her driving force in acting is to inspire and help others: "I hope that the people who see the roles I play or the works I create are inspired to do their best tomorrow. I believe that entertainment such as movies and dramas have the element of becoming someone's hero or saving someone's life, so I would like to keep doing this job."[76]
  • Has no desire to compete on the world stage and wants to stay in Japan.[12]
  • Faces the characters she plays with the desire to love them all.[16]
  • For her acting roles, she tries not to read too much of the original works, as she would otherwise try to imitate it, and she wouldn't be able express her own personality. "Of course, if the director or staff recommends it, I always read it, but otherwise, I try not to look at anything other than the script."[5]
  • Working as an actress in stage plays changed her perspective and technique of voice, and was overall a great experience for her that positively impacted her future work in TV and film. "For me, the stage was the first time I became aware of the range of my voice. I learned new techniques to express myself, such as sounding hysterical when I get angry in a high voice, which makes me sound like a psychopathic and crazy person."[77]
  • Loves working as an actress and pushing herself to the limit.[73] [3]
  • Doesn't have much confidence to make a living as an actor since she views the profession as very uncertain. "I think it's the same in any job, but in this world, you realize that there are always substitutes.", "This job is a world in which you are always walking on a balance beam, and you never know when you will fall off."[12]
  • Is very busy and has a full schedule even on her days off, otherwise she would I feel restless. On her days off, she goes to the gym, takes lessons or schedules appointments to meet with friends.[12]
    • Learned the importance of setting up a schedule when EXILE HIRO once told her "You should take care of how you spend your time off."[12]
  • The most important thing to her in her work is to have fun. She attributes this point of view to her parents' optimistic mindset. "I have been told, "Nothing bad will happen if you always smile," so I try to think, "Let's smile and have fun.""[2]
    • According to herself, even when her work is tough or painful, she ends up saying "It was fun" since she fundamentally loves her job. "When I look back on the past, I basically have nothing but happy memories."[3]
  • In an interview in summer 2022, she described E-girls as "a place like a family to which she could always return", the reason she started enjoying dancing and a valuable life experience. "I could fall in love with dancing, which I did not start on my own volition, and I think I was able to keep dancing because everyone was there. There were struggles in balancing both, but the group was the reason I was able to do my best in my acting career. I am really glad that I continued to do both. I learned how to cooperate and respond flexibly through group activities, and this experience has come to life in my acting as well. Now I think again that E-girls was a big part of my life, and it was a place that gave me energy."[5]
    • In an interview in spring 2023, she also described her time as a member of E-girls as "an irreplaceable "best youth"", with member whom she greatly admires. "There were so many exciting members that I wanted to follow them to the death [...]."[73]
    • Felt secure in E-girls, both on a personal and professional level. "Being in a group that had a name, I could tour and interact directly with the audience, and I could always feel that 'this is the meaning of my existence'. However, it takes a long time from the period a play is shot to being released to the world. When you are filming, you don't get to hear directly from the consumers, and you don't know the meaning of your existence as you play a role and become a part of the production. 'Why am I doing this job?', 'Whom am I doing it for?' I often went home and thought about it, and I told myself, 'For now, I'm just going to do the best I can and just blindly look at nothing.'"[12]
    • Even though she was not able to participate in many school events and didn't have much time to sleep as she had been active as member of E-girls since junior high school, she still enjoyed her time in the group.[2]
    • Even though she originally had no desire to become an artist, she considers her days as a member of the group among the things that made her happy.[3]
  • After E-girls' disbandment, she revealed that there had been some conflicts in balancing acting and group activities. "I wondered if people would think I was not concentrating on my work, and vice versa...."[5]
  • Wants to actively communicate with her juniors and younger actors because she had been the youngest member of E-girls and was happy and grateful when she could talk to her senior members, which helped them grow closer.[1]
    • Since she is the eldest daughter in her family, she appreciated the senior members as they were like older sisters to her.[1]
  • Thinks people become stronger by overcoming big obstacles and high hurdles, and that happiness awaits them after overcoming many trials. "Even though I myself have had my share of troubles and sad events in my life, I have always wanted to find my purpose and fulfillment in them and move forward."[78]
  • Loves dogs and has two dogs at home.[72][16][15]
  • When it comes to her routine for physical and mental health, she is conscious of getting enough sleep, beauty maintenance, eating food she likes and physical exercise.[74]
  • Loves watching variety shows.[79]
  • Likes the suspense genre, and reads books that feature unexpected twists and turns.[80] However, she reads really irregularly since she avoids reading in periods when she is working on a project. "I try not to read too much when I am working on a project, because I get mixed up between public and private life, and I tend to read during my vacations."[2]
  • Likes cooking for herself, especially as a way to detoxify her digital life.[16] Her specialty is Japanese food.[1] However, she doesn't make elaborate dishes.[3]
    • Her mother is also interested in culinary arts, especially bread.[15]
  • According to herself, her specialty is having dexterous hands.[75]
    • Good at sewing and knitting, and often remakes her own clothes.[3][75]
    • "When I was in E-Girls, if a member's necklace got tangled, I would fix it (laughs)."[75]
  • An outdoor person. "If someone asks me to go outside in the morning, I'm totally willing to go, and I don't often turn them down."[3]
  • Does kickboxing, works out at the gym, occasionally plays futsal, can do horseback riding, and plays golf from time to time.[3][75]
    • Loves physical activity so much that she used to organize futsal tournaments with her brother and sister.[75]
  • Likes visiting saunas, but prefers going alone to private ones since she feels nervous when people are watching her.[3]
  • The ideal female figure to her is someone who is graceful, follows you three steps back, but also has a strong ego and does not force it on others.[16]
  • To the question if she had learned anything from dancing and acting since she was little, she revealed that she didn't intentionally continue those activities, but that they were the only things she was good at. "I didn't have anything else I wanted to do, so I didn't hesitate."[16]
  • Hopes to look her age and more dignified in the future since she tends to have a childish face and look younger than her age. "I would like to try my best to be seen as older through trial and error, while gaining experience, changing my hairstyle, and studying myself."[2]
  • When she was 16 years old, she had the vague idea of having a child at the age of 24.[1]
  • Has a close friendship with fellow bunny and E-girls members Yamaguchi Nonoka[81] and Takebe Yuzuna.[2]
  • Started an Instagram account on February 1, 2017.
  • Started a Twitter account on January 1, 2023.
