Discography

Washio Reina (鷲尾伶菜), also known by the stage name Rei (伶), is a Japanese singer, performer and model. She is a former member of E-girls and Flower and currently active as a solo artist.

Washio debuted as a soloist with the digital single "Call Me Sick / Konna Sekai ni Shita no wa Dare da" in October 2020 under the stage name Rei. As of July 2023, she is promoting under her birth name, Washio Reina.

Early Life[]

Washio Reina was born on January 20, 1994, in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, Japan.

Since kindergarten, Washio had loved singing due to the influence of her mother who was very active in music, encouraged her to play the piano and went to karaoke with her. Ultimately, she aspired to become a singer.[1][2][3] However, she did not have the confidence to sing in public and was a shy child.[2]

A changing point in her life came when she attended a concert of EXILE at Fukuoka Dome with her mother. Washio was so impressed by their performance that after learning an EXPG Studio would open in Fukuoka, she started attending it in her first year of high school. To be able to pay the fees of EXPG Fukuoka, she worked a part-time job in Karatsu.[2]

Washio dropped out from school after her first year of high school to focus on becoming a singer.[2] At the age of 17, she moved to Tokyo.[4]

Besides EXILE, Washio cites singer JUJU as another big musical influence during her childhood.[5]

Career[]

2011[]

In 2011, after attending EXPG Fukuoka for two years, Washio participated in the vocal selection of the EXILE Presents VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 3 ~For Girls~. Looking back, she later recalled that she considered this audition one of her last chances to become a professional singer: "If it didn't work out, I was too old, and if I couldn't get results by the time I was 20, I thought about getting a job and finding a stable position. My parents were worried about me, and I felt that if I didn't do this, I would cause trouble for them. But I was lucky and got my debut when I was 17, so I was able to find a job that I liked."[1]

On July 26, during an E-Girls SHOW event in SHIBUYA-AX, it was revealed that Washio was one of the winners of the VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 3 and was added to FLOWER as a vocalist.[6] On that same day, she was also added as a member of E-girls, having a concurrent position between the group and FLOWER.

On October 12, she made debut with FLOWER with the single "Still".

2015[]

In September, she made debut as a model being featured on the November issue of the magazine LARME.[7]

2019[]

On September 20, with the announcement of Flower's disbandment, Washio revealed that she is set to a new goal of solo activities while being member of E-girls.[8]

On September 30, she left Flower with the group's disbandment.

On December 22, with the announcement of E-girls' disbandment set for around the end of 2020, it was revealed that Washio would be making solo debut.[9]

2020[]

On January 31, it was revealed that Washio would be singing the theme song of the movie Shousetsu no Kamisama, titled "Call Me Sick", and an insert song of the soundtrack, titled "Konna Sekai ni Shita no wa Dare da". It was also revealed that she would be using the stage name Rei (伶) for her solo activities.[10] She later revealed that she originally decided to promote under a different name because she wanted to try out various songs with a new self without being influenced or restricted by the person she was in the group(s).[11]

On September 27, it was announced that she would sing the title song of an upcoming short film from the CINEMA FIGHTER franchise directed by Mori Yoshitaka and starring Nakatsuka Yuta.

On October 2, she made solo debut as Rei with the digital single "Call Me Sick / Konna Sekai ni Shita no wa Dare da".[12][13]

On December 31, she left E-girls with the group's disbandment, now being active as a solo artist under the stage name Rei.

2021[]

On March 23, Flower's YouTube channel was renamed for Rei to use it as as the official channel for her solo career.[14] At the same time, it was revealed that there were plans for her to release song covers selected by herself, live streaming, as well as videos about her hobbies and private life.[15][16]

On April 8, it was announced that Rei's song "Chiru Chiru Michiru" would be used as theme song for the "Kinou Yori Akaku Ashita Yori Aoku -CINEMA FIGHTERS project-" movie Kaidan Mangetsu Hamagurizaka.[17]

On June 9, she released her second digital single "Kimi to nara Ii yo.".[18]

On July 29, it was announced that she will open her official digital fan club "freivor" (フレイバー) on August 2. The name of the fan club was coined by adding the word "rei" to the spelling of "flavour", meaning that the "rei" will only be completed when the "fragrance and flavor" of the fans are added. The digital fan club is planning to offer original contents such as movies and radios by Rei, advance tickets for live performances, and sales of members-only goods.[19]

In the same month, she held her first Billboard Live events in Osaka and Yokohama on July 22 and July 29 titled rei "the first" Billboard Live 2021.[20][21][22] Additionally, she held another Billboard Live event in Tokyo on October 23-24.[23][24]

On November 17, she released her third digital single "Houseki", featuring YOASOBI member Ikuta Lilas.

On December 21, she released her 4th digital single "Encount" featuring Sasagawa Mao.

2022[]

On January 19, her song "Chiru Chiru Michiru", which was previously released on the soundtrack album Kinou Yori Akaku Ashita Yori Aoku -CINEMA FIGHTERS project- in November 2021, was released as a digital single.[25]

On April 13, she released her first studio album Just Wanna Sing.[26][27][28][29]

On August 22, September 2 and October 15, she held her second Billboard Live events in Osaka, Tokyo and Yokohama titled rei Billboard Live 2022 the f"rei"vor.[30][31][32][33]

2023[]

On January 16, it was announced that Rei would sing the image song of the "SAGA2024 National Sports Festival and All Disability Sports Festival" the titled "Batons ~Kimi no Yume ga Kanau Toki~".[34][35][36]

On January 18, she released her 6th digital single "Tsuyoku Hakanai Monotachi", which is a remake of Cocco's song of the same title from 1997 and produced by Tokimeki Records.[37][38][39]

On February 15, she released her 7th digital single "So Addictive".[40][41] The song had been used as the theme song for the TV drama Otto wo Shakaiteki ni Massatsu suru 5-tsu no Hoho since January 10.[42][43][44]

On July 21 and July 24, she held her third live concert titled Reina Washio SPECIAL REQUEST LIVE, with its setlist being composed based on requests from fans for all the songs she has sung as "Washio Reina" and "Rei" so far.[45][46][47] Starting from the date of the first concert, she went by her birth name, Washio Reina, again for her career as a soloist instead of her stage name, Rei.[48] According to herself, what prompted her to change er name back to Washio Reina was the concert itself: "For that live performance, we asked for requests from fans, and we received a wide variety of songs, including songs from the group days, solo songs, and cover songs. When I thought about combining such a wide range of songs and presenting them as one live performance, I thought it would be better to change the name to Washio Reina instead of Rei. It would be nice to sing songs from my time in the group as Rei, but from my own perspective, I thought it would be more meaningful to sing the songs under the name that the fans have supported for so long."[11][49] Looking back after working as "Rei", she felt that it was easier to challenge herself with things she was missing and new musical styles. "I was able to differentiate myself from the group I was in, and in a good way, I was able to venture into new genres."[50]

On October 11, she will release her second album For My Dear. The album's title track, "Gin'iro", was pre-released digitally on September 15.[51][52][53]

From November 7 to November 16, she held her fourth live concert Reina Washio Billboard Live.[48][54]

On December 31, it was announced that Washio would be leaving her agency LDH JAPAN and her record label Sony Music Labels at the end of the same day. At the same time, she would transfer labels to LDH Records.[55][56][57]

LDH JAPAN

Announcement by Washio Reina[59]
Thank you very much for your continued support.

At this time, I have decided to leave LDH JAPAN.

I have been a member of LDH JAPAN for about 12 and a half years, including group and solo activities, and the things I have learned through that time are immeasurable.

I was 17 years old when I joined LDH JAPAN, but over the past 12 years, I have learned that it is no mean feat to achieve your dreams, and that it takes luck, hard work, love for it, and faith to persevere.

Looking back now, I can say that I was able to achieve most of my dreams thanks to the LDH staff, the people who have supported me in various fields, the members who have walked with me, and the fans who have supported me.

I am so full of gratitude that I cannot express my gratitude enough.

The connections and experiences I have gained will remain as irreplaceable assets to me.

Although the form will change, I hope to continue to walk forward with music in my own way without stopping here, and I would be very happy if you would continue to support me.

Once again, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone at LDH, Sony Music Labels, and all of my fans who have been so kind to me.

I will do my best to repay you for your kindness.
Thank you for your continued support.

  • A fan of YOASOBI and has worked with the duo professionally as well as privately.[73]
    • Has collaborated on the song "Houseki" with member Ikuta Lilas.
    • Often plays video games together with member Ayase.
  • According to herself, her own singing voice is difficult to use and doesn't fit a lot of genres: "It doesn't suit the genre of music I like, so I admire singers who are huskier, thicker, and cooler.", (to the response that many people appreciate her unique voice) "But in my case, I am sure that I am just a little better at finding genres and styles of singing that suit my voice."[74]
  • Thinks her singing voice is more suited to a dark tone than a light tone: "In fact, no matter how bright the mood of my songs, there is always a dark side lurking somewhere."[75]
    • Tends to prefer sad songs, but thinks that's because the music she has cultivated and been exposed to in her activities, as well as the style she has expressed, have given off such colors, that people want sad songs and shadowy expressions sung by her.[11]
    • Has always found it difficult to sing upbeat songs.[76]
  • Cites "emotion" as the most important part of singing and actively analyzes her own to grow: "What I value in nurturing my emotions is reading books and looking at my emotions objectively. When I am depressed, I analyze my feelings about my depression. On the other hand, when I am having a very good time, I think about why I am having a good time. It may be a habit of mine to always look at things objectively (laughs)."[4]
  • Thinks that both singing independently self-produced songs and having someone else produce them or provide the lyrics to her songs are important because she values to be able to experience a world view or an idea that she doesn't have.[77]
  • Owns a Siberian cat named "Kinako". Reina describes her as "always so calm and confident no matter where she goes".[74]
    • For her merchandise as a solo artist, Reina has used photos of Kinako.[74]
  • One of the things she wanted to do after going solo were collaborations.[75]
  • Since becoming a soloist, she feels that she has a stronger sense of truly enjoying the music she loves.[4]
  • Has a lot of creative freedom in her work as a solo artist: "I always choose my own songs, but I tend to choose songs that are difficult to sing. I tend to gravitate toward songs with tricky melodies."[75]
    • When she selects songs, she is also conscious of music that easily fits her voice and way of expression. According to herself, she usually ends up far away from happy songs.[78]
  • Started posting covers on YouTube after becoming a soloist since she was unable to perform live due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[75][3]
    • Accepts requests for covers, and sees it as an opportunity to grow by trying various styles and broaden her knowledge in music.[79]
  • As a soloist, she values and tries to appease her fans from her time as a group member: "I am only able to do what I do because of the people who support me, so I am always conscious of the balance between sensing what everyone is looking for and showing them something new at the same time."[75]
    • Also hopes to add a new color to her songs that is different from that of the group and unique to her as a solo performer.[11]
    • "Of course, I have to be conscious of what my fans would like and what songs would please them, but most of all, I think that what I personally like, what I want to do now, and what I can enjoy doing will reach the most people."[80]
  • According to herself, most of the dreams she had since she was a child came true during her time in E-girls and Flower, so as a soloist she wants to simply "enjoy music and walk slowly with everyone who supports her". "Of course it would be wonderful to perform at a big venue or something like that, but I think I am more inclined to go on as a solo performer in my own way. I would like to enjoy music in a way that is in line with my life."[75], "[...] Rather than chasing big dreams now, I would like to continue to work while genuinely enjoying music. I want to express what I like and give back to those who follow me [...]. I have a goal to do hall gigs, but I also hope to do more fan-based activities in the future."[78]
  • When asked what she gained from her time as a member of a group, she responded: "E-girls was a group of strong women. We started out with no fans and had to forge our own path in a tough environment. Looking back, I feel that we definitely gained guts. And there are things that I have accumulated because I was a member of E-girls. Specifically, through our activities, I naturally became able to recognize those who have similar sensibilities and ideas to my own. Perhaps because of this, I feel that people similar to myself have been gathering around me recently. That was something I didn't feel when I was a teenager. I think that something like a "sense of smell" has become stronger. I think it is because I have had the experience of meeting a wide variety of people through long group activities."[4]
    • Describes her time in E-girls and Flower as very busy but educational and fulfilling: "Every day passed by at a dizzying pace, and if I didn't learn, I wouldn't be able to keep up. I had the feeling that if I didn't constantly grow in some way every day, I would be left behind in the world. I think that is what group activities are all about. I think everyone was really working hard. I lived for about 10 years with the feeling that if everyone else was putting in 100 percent effort, I should put in 200 percent effort so that I wouldn't be left behind.", "I had to think about one thing after another. Even when I was doing this kind of work now, I had to think about next year's gigs and albums. There were regular vision meetings. [...]."[1]
  • Very confident straight-forward in her own work: "When it comes to work, I basically believe in myself. For example, when I get an inspiration to do something new, I know it is the right time to do it, and I am sure that my intuition is not wrong. It is an intuition that comes from my past activities. That is why I don't consult with others about my work, and I will force myself to justify the path I have chosen. In order to justify it, I have to succeed. I will work very hard so that I can look back and say that the path I chose was the right one."[4]
  • Puts work before love: "I am the type of person who takes on work with a strong will, but I tend to put love on the back burner. I am conservative when it comes to love, and I consider myself to be masculine on the inside (laughs)."[4]
    • Nevertheless, she has the desire to get married in the future.[4]
  • According to herself, she is not the type of person who sets goals and works toward them, and rather does .[80]
  • The kind of woman she admires is "someone who is hard on herself and kind to others".[4]
  • Likes anime, and covers the theme songs of anime that she is into at the time.[79]
  • According to herself, she doesn't live healthy at all: "I love junk food, I don't hold back on what I want to eat, and I don't like vegetables."[4]
  • An indoor person, but loves to go abroad. According to herself, she spends most of her time at home watching dramas and movies.[73]
  • Describes her personality as either "0 or 100".[73]
  • A fan of the band Aqua Timez, and attended their breakup concert.[80]
  • Has been good friends with Kazuhara Ryuto for many years and always dreamed of collaborating one day.[1]
