Sugieda Mayu (杉枝真結) is a Japanese model, radio personality, and former performer and singer. She is a former member of the groups Happiness and E-girls.

On April 7, 2014, she graduated from both groups and left LDH. Since her departure, she has been focusing on her career as a model and radio personality.

Early Life[]

Sugieda Mayu was born on January 2, 1996 in Osaka Prefecture, Japan.

In her youth, she attended STEPOUT DANCE STUDIO and EXPG Osaka.

Career[]

2007[]

In 2007, she won Grand Prix at the Osaka Games award at the NARUMIYA CINDERELLA AUDITION.

2009[]

On December 25, MAYU was added to Happiness as a vocalist after passing the Happiness Vocal Audition.[1][2] Starting from that day, her stage name became "MAYU".

2011[]

On February 9, she made her major debut with Happiness with the release of their first single "Kiss Me".

On April 24, she was announced as member of E-girls, having a concurrent position between the group and Happiness.

2012[]

On August 10, it was announced that MAYU had been diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis and the first three concerts of Happiness' first live tour Happiness LIVE TOUR 2012 "Happy Time" had been re-scheduled to October.[3]

Shortly after, on August 23, it was announced that it would still take some time before she were able to perform satisfactorily as a member of Happiness, and it had been decided to cancel all concerts of the Happiness LIVE TOUR 2012 "Happy Time".[4] Subsequently, MAYU went on a hiatus and halted all activities with both Happiness and E-girls to receive treatment and recover.

2013[]

On June 3, she changed her stage name, "MAYU", and started using her birth name.[5]

In May, she returned to activities[6] and was supposed to participate in Happiness' fifth single "Sunshine Dream ~Ichido Kiri no Natsu~" (released on August 7), but on June 25, she announced that she had decided to decline participating in the Happiness VS Flower Musha Shugyo performances as well as the release of the single considering her current physical condition and that she was not fully recovered yet, therefore being absent.[7]

Announcement by Sugieda Mayu[7]
To all of you who love me, Sugieda Mayu

I have an announcement to make to all of you.

This time, I have decided to withdraw from participating in the "Happiness VS Flower Musha Shugyo" (warrior training program) starting on July 2 and the simultaneous single release on August 7.

I'm truly sorry to everyone who was looking forward to Happiness' activities with 8 members and my full recovery.

As some of you may have seen last night's Shuukan EXILE broadcast, I thought that declining to participate would mean disappointing everyone who supports me again... I was conflicted with many emotions before making this decision.

To be honest...even now, I am filled with the desire to participate.

However, considering my current physical condition, I am not sure whether I can deliver a 100% performance until the last day of the tour, and I thought that if I cause the members to be worried or if Happiness is unable to deliver a perfect performance, the meaning of this Musha Shugyo training would be diminished.
Also, I felt that if I were to force myself to participate and then get sick again, it would cause even more worry and trouble to the members and fans.

Is this a time when I should just go ahead and do it just because I want to appear?
Or should I suppress those feelings and choose not to appear?

I'm really sorry for making this announcement at the last minute and raising everyone's hopes, but I've made this decision after discussing it with HIRO and the staff.

Even if I don't participate, my enthusiasm and spirit are the same as the other members!

I'll do my best so that the day will come soon when I can give a performance that everyone will recognize, and so that I can live up to your expectations!

On August 11, she resumed her activities in both Happiness and E-girls by participating in the final event of the Happiness VS Flower Musha Shugyo.[8]

2014[]

On April 7, Sugieda announced her departure from both Happiness and E-girls.[9][10][6][1]

Announcement by Sugieda Mayu[9]
Thank you very much for your continued support of Happiness/E-girls and Sugieda Mayu.

This is sudden, but I, Sugieda Mayu, have decided to leave both Happiness and E-girls.

I am truly sorry that this sudden announcement has come as a surprise to all of you.

I moved to Tokyo in my third year of junior high school, and have been a member of Happiness and E-girls for the past four years...these four years are filled with countless memories. Because I was in a group, I was able to have many experiences and feelings that I would not have been able to experience alone.

And at all times, everyone's thoughts were by my side. I sincerely feel that all the activities I have experienced up until now have been made possible by the support and help of so many people who have cheered me on and warmly watched over me.

I was finally able to return to work last summer after my illness, but the staff suggested that I take some time off to look ahead to the future.
After much consideration and worry, I came to the conclusion that it would be better to keep moving forward, even though I know it will be a difficult road, rather than stopping.

As much as I feel for all of you, it is also true that it is because I have been blessed with the best friends that I have been able to come this far, and I am filled with gratitude to the members as well. They have been and will always remain my beloved and precious friends.

I have discussed this matter with all the members of Happiness and we have been able to move forward together, supporting each other's dreams and working hard together.

From now on, I will walk the path I have walked together with the other members alone. I will further hone myself and prepare for the time to come. I want to challenge myself and grow, not just in singing and dancing, but in new possibilities.

I will do my best so that this is not a farewell, but a new start that leads to the future, so once again, I would like to ask for your continued support.

Thank you very much for supporting Sugieda Mayu of Happiness/E-girls for about four years.
